Free access to state run healthcare in Spain

If you are registered to work in Spain and make national insurance contributions you can then get state run healthcare.

If you were registered as a resident of Spain before 24 April 2012, have an income of less than 100,000€ and are not covered for healthcare you may also be able to register for state run healthcare.

Currently if you are resident in Spain and are receiving your UK pension paid to Spain you can also apply for state run healthcare.

Also in Spain access to state run healthcare for children and pregnant women is covered by law.

Currently if you are on Holiday in Spain from the UK and have a UK EHIC card you can obtain state run healthcare.

If you are on holiday in Spain and have a travel insurance policy you can access one of the many private clinics in Spain.

Buying into the State run healthcare system in Spain

Convenio Especial - Each regional health authority has different ways of applying for this. It is a public health insurance scheme where you pay a monthly fee.

The average monthly fee is 60€ for under 65's and 157€ for over 65's.

You do however have to have been a resident and have residencia in Spain for at least one one year sometimes two.

Private Healthcare in Spain

There are many different options here in Spain.

You will have the option to make no co payments for treatment, or a small , medium or larger payment . The larger co payment you choose the less you pay on a monthly basis.

You can choose a policy that just covers you for general doctors visits (only worth considering as a top up to state run care) or a comprehensive policy that also covers you for hospitalization, surgery and emergencies.

Most you will find exclude pre existing conditions and also have waiting times for certain treatments.

If you require cover to apply for residencia you will need to prove that you have an annual policy paid in full. You will also be required to submit a certificate with the terms in Spanish when applying. They do not allow policies with high co payments.

GPS Insurance services can offer this type of policy and have various options dependant on age and the area you live.

All comprehensive policies will also cover you for worldwide emergency health cover, however be aware the limits of cover are not high and in no way are a substitute for a travel insurance policy.

Having a private healthcare policy can give you peace of mind that you will not have long waiting times to see a Doctor or Specialist or to receive further treatment.

Private healthcare in Spain is also not as expensive as it is in the UK.

If you are self employed it is also tax deductible.
