If you are looking to buy a home, motor vehicle, property and such like in Spain you will need your own NIE Number.

The same applies even if you may rent a property and the landlord asks you to put the electricity or water in your name.

Also if you wish to purchase a phone contract.

To start work you will require a social security number and this also initially requires an NIE number.

You will also find the majority of Insurance companies require you to have an NIE number before you can purchase a policy.

So, as you can see it can prove pretty difficult to get by in Spain without one !!!

Your NIE paper will now expire after three months.

This is because now legally you should not live in Spain for more than 90 days without applying for Residencia.

There are a few different ways to apply for both NIE and Residencia.

(Note you can apply for NIE & Residencia at the same time should you wish)

1 - You can do this yourself by visiting the local National Police Station - However this can be time consuming and arduous, especially if your Spanish is not great .

You will need to arrive early at your local appointed police station (times do vary from area to area).

If they say open at 0900 it is best to arrive at 0830 as it is usually a ticket allocation system.

You will require:

Your passport -

Copies of your passport

Two passport size photos

A Spanish address (Proof of)

You will be requested to complete the application form and complete the form to take to the appointed local bank - Visit the bank with the form and pay the requested amount - Go back to the Police station with the bank form stamped - Visit the desk once again with said forms - Returning another day to pick up your NIE/Residencia

2 - As above and you can take a translator with you (a lot will have much experience of applying for NIE/Residencia so can guide you through the process)

3 - If you do not wish to do this yourself you can employ the services of an Abogado (Solicitor)

This I would suggest is the most efficient way of obtaining both NIE and Residencia if you are relatively new to Spain.
