Living in Spain can be a dream, but it could also end up being a nightmare if you do not have access to healthcare.

So it is important that you have healthcare in place should you or your family require it.

If you are working (self employed or under a contract) or you are a pensioner with your pension paid into an account in Spain, you will have access to the Spanish Health care system.

However, Private Healthcare is still an option to be considered taking into account the possible language barrier (even if your Spanish is good, medical terms can be baffling) Also waiting times can be long for GP, Specialist appoitments and surgery.

If you are looking to apply for Residencia and you do not fall into any of the above catagories you will be required to prove you have an annual private healthcare policy (as well as a certain amount of money in the bank) that covers you for everything including hospitalization and surgery.

So what do you need to look for when taking out a Private Healthcare Policy?

Check what private clinics are available in your area ?

Check what the waiting times will be for non emergency hospitalization or surgery, when you initially take out a policy?

Check what the co - payments will be for different types of treatment?

Do they charge you for inpatient treatment?

Are there any bonus covers offered such as discounts off prescription payments?

Is there a English speaking 24 hour helpline

The younger you are the cheaper the policy will be and the less likely you are to have any pre existing medical conditions that would be excluded.

Taking out Private Healthcare ensures you have access to fast and immediate care and diagnosis.
